OLEA started with a simple frustration: a bathroom shelf full of beautiful bottles and no idea what was inside them. So we publish every formula in full, with percentages, and we only use botanicals with evidence behind them.
Clean means something specific to us. It is not a marketing word. It is a list of over 1800 ingredients we will never use, a bio-compatible base for every product, and stable pH levels that respect the skin barrier rather than fighting it.
Kind to the planet is a practice, not a slogan. Refillable amber glass, small batches dated on the base, plant-based waxes instead of petrolatum, and a supply chain we can name farm by farm.
Long before serums had ingredient lists, plants were the whole routine. Olive leaf in the Mediterranean, turmeric paste across South Asia, rosehip oil in the Andes. What is remarkable is how many of those traditions survive contact with modern evidence.
Take bakuchiol, extracted from the babchi plant used in Ayurvedic practice. In a 12-week split-face study it matched retinol on wrinkle depth and pigmentation while causing far less peeling. It is the reason our sleeping mask exists.
Not every tradition holds up, and we say so. Lemon juice for brightening damages the barrier. Raw turmeric stains and sensitises. Our job is to keep the plants that work, dose them properly, and leave the folklore on the shelf.
The skin barrier is a brick wall of cells held together by lipid mortar. Every strong acid, every hot shower and every new product you introduce on the same night pulls a little mortar out. Redness, tightness and breakouts follow.
A slower routine is not a lazier one. It means one active at a time, introduced over two weeks, and a rich lipid step every night. Squalane, ceramides and oat lipids rebuild what the day took away.
If your skin is angry right now, stop everything except a gentle cleanser, a barrier oil and sunscreen for ten days. Then reintroduce one thing. Most of the time the routine was the problem, not the skin.
The average bathroom throws away more plastic per year than the kitchen. Most of it is packaging that was used once, for a product that was only half finished.
Start with what runs out fastest. A refillable cleanser saves roughly six bottles a year on its own. Our amber glass is designed to be refilled from a paper pouch, and the pump lasts for years when rinsed.
Then look at the ingredients themselves. Plant-derived squalane replaces shark-derived and petroleum-derived versions with no change in feel. Small choices, repeated daily, are the whole point.
